How to Calculate Cost Per Ton

Cost per ton = Total cost ÷ (Weight ÷ Weight per ton)
  1. Convert the weight to tons. Divide pounds by 2,000 for US short tons, or kilograms by 1,000 for metric tons.
  2. Divide the total cost by the tons. The result is your cost per ton.
Example: A load of gravel costs $2,500 and weighs 5,000 lbs.
5,000 lbs ÷ 2,000 = 2.5 short tons → $2,500 ÷ 2.5 = $1,000 per short ton ($1,102.31 per metric ton, $1.10 per kg).
Example: A 20,000 t silo project costs 35,000,000.
35,000,000 ÷ 20,000 = 1,750 per metric ton.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate cost per ton?

Divide the total cost by the total weight expressed in tons. For example, $2,500 for 5,000 lbs: 5,000 ÷ 2,000 = 2.5 short tons, and $2,500 ÷ 2.5 = $1,000 per short ton. If the weight is in kilograms, divide by 1,000 to get metric tons first.

Is price per ton the same as price per short ton?

In the United States, "ton" almost always means the 2,000 lb short ton. In most other countries and in international trade, "ton" or "tonne" means the 1,000 kg metric ton, which is about 10% heavier. A price per metric ton is therefore about 10.2% higher than the same goods priced per short ton. Always confirm which ton a quote uses.

How do I convert a price per ton to a price per kg?

Divide a price per metric ton by 1,000 to get the price per kg (e.g. $415 per tonne = $0.415 per kg). For a price per short ton, divide by 907.18. Our price per ton converter does every combination.

How do I convert a price per ton to a price per pound?

Divide a price per short ton by 2,000 (e.g. $200 per ton = $0.10 per lb). Divide a price per metric ton by 2,204.62 (e.g. $12.07 per metric ton = $0.0055 per lb).

Does the calculator work in other currencies?

Yes. Choose your currency (USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, AUD, CAD, AED and more) from the menu above the calculator. The maths is the same in any currency; only the symbol changes. No exchange-rate conversion is applied.

Is my data stored?
